should have been fired weeks ago. There has been at least one disaster on special teams every week, and the weeks where there has only been one have been the best weeks. He most certainly would have been fired if the Tennessee Titans had lost to the Houston Texans last week.
But let’s put all of that aside because it is not Anderson’s fault that Jha’Quan Jackson keeps putting the ball on the ground. Well, I guess you could blame Anderson for the fact that Jackson is still the returner, but that is really more on Brian Callahan who has the ultimate say on all facets of the football teams.
The returner issue is not specific to this year. You might remember that at Ran Carthon’s introductory press conference, Mike Vrabel said something to him along the lines of “Go find me someone who can catch punts.” It’s been an issued with this team for years.
Let’s go back to Adoree Jackson. The Titans spent a first-round pick on him. They certainly drafted him because they thought he was a really good cornerback, but an added bonus there was he was a great returner in college as well. He returned two kickoffs and four punts for touchdowns while at USC.
However, when he got to the Titans he completely forgot how to be a good returner. He couldn’t decide when to catch a punt and when to let it go. When he did catch it, he was not effective as a returner. He averaged just 8.75 yards per return in his time with the Titans.
Clearly there is something in the water over at Saint Thomas Sports Park that keeps them from identifying someone who can effectively return kicks and/or punts. It shouldn’t be that hard, right? There are plenty of guys doing it well every week in college. Maybe this will be the year they actually find a guy who can do it.
