Oscar Piastri has taken his first meaningful steps into the 2026 Formula One season, with early test data from Barcelona offering a tantalising glimpse of what may unfold between the Australian and his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris. As anticipation builds around an intra-team duel at Woking, even these tightly controlled laps have begun to fuel debate about their competitive balance.
The return of Formula One machinery to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya marked the end of the off-season hiatus, as all eleven teams assembled for a discreet pre-season shakedown. Although fans will have to wait for the televised Bahrain tests in February, this closed-door running provided teams with an invaluable opportunity to stress-test their radically reworked cars under real conditions.
McLaren initially eased into the programme, with Norris taking to the track on the third day of running. According to data circulated by Spanish outlet SoyMotor, the reigning world champion logged a best lap of 1:18.725 on medium tyres, placing him third among the eight drivers participating during that session and offering a baseline for comparison.
A day later, Piastri was handed the keys to McLaren’s 2026 challenger and immediately made his presence felt. Over 48 laps in the morning session, he recorded a fastest time of 1:18.419—just over three tenths quicker than Norris—suggesting a sharp acclimatisation to the new regulations and hinting at a tightly matched partnership heading into the season.
While such times must be interpreted cautiously, the broader picture from Barcelona points toward Mercedes as the early pace-setter. Kimi Antonelli and George Russell consistently topped the charts, with Antonelli’s 1:17.081 standing out as the benchmark of the week. Still, within the McLaren camp, Piastri’s early edge over Norris has quietly intensified interest in a rivalry that could become one of 2026’s defining subplots.
