Former England captain Wayne Rooney has shared his view that Manchester City hold a clear psychological advantage over Arsenal in the ongoing Premier League title battle. According to him, City’s experience, mentality, and winning history at the highest level could play a decisive role as the season reaches its most critical stage.
Arsenal currently sit at the top of the table with a nine-point lead, although they have played more matches than their closest rivals. However, the gap appears less secure as they prepare for a crucial visit to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, a fixture many are already describing as a potential title-defining encounter. City, meanwhile, strengthened their position with a dominant win over Chelsea, while Arsenal suffered a setback against Bournemouth.
Rooney explained that Manchester City’s biggest advantage lies in their familiarity with pressure situations and their ability to stay composed during tense title races. He believes Pep Guardiola’s presence and the squad’s experience of winning multiple championships allow them to remain calm even when results fluctuate. In contrast, he suggested Arsenal players could feel the weight of expectation if their form dips, leading to doubt and hesitation in key moments.
Beyond the title race, Rooney also commented on Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult situation after a disappointing run of results that has dragged them into the relegation zone. He noted that their recent performance lacked energy and consistency, even with a managerial change aimed at sparking improvement. He warned that relegation would be a major setback for the club and could lead to uncertainty among players regarding their future.
Tottenham’s struggles have now extended into 2026 without a Premier League victory, adding further pressure ahead of their upcoming match against Brighton. Rooney stressed that the team urgently needs a win to rebuild confidence and stability, warning that continued poor results could make recovery increasingly difficult as the season progresses.
