For Newcastle United fans and those of every other club on the outside, the goings on at Chelsea continue to entertain.
Towards the end of last season, the sheer ridiculous size of the West London club’s spending appeared to be finally seeing some small reward forthcoming, a bit better form with at last maybe some kind of sense of order and stability.
However, after qualifying for the Europa Conference League, these Chelsea owners got rid of yet another credible manager.
Mauricio Pochettino forced out of the Chelsea circus after only ten months in the job, which actually is quite good going under these owners!
Now Sky Sports have given a hilarious update on the imminent official announcement of the latest who will (temporarily…) fill the Chelsea hotseat.
Sky Sports report – 2 June 2024:
‘Chelsea are set to confirm Enzo Maresca as their new head coach on Monday.
The 44-year-old, who will succeed Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge, has agreed a five-year deal and will move from Leicester after leading them back to the Premier League by winning the Championship.
The contract length reflects that Chelsea are focused on bringing long-term success back to the club and ends any future speculation about renewals.
Senior Chelsea figures believe the new head coach will be the final piece of the jigsaw to fit into the new modern structure they have built at the club.’
It is quite astonishing how the likes of Sky Sports and others in the media, cover the ongoing shambles at Chelsea, instead of ridiculing the clear and absolute shambles, they bend over backwards to be sympathetic and supportive, happy to paint a picture of how supposedly great everything is.
Saying that a five year deal has been agreed, Sky Sports saying ‘The contract length reflects that Chelsea are focused on bringing long-term success back to the club and ends any future speculation about renewals.’
Oh yes, this removes any speculation whatsoever of Chelsea looking for another manager in the next five years…
Reality is, what odds would you want on Enzo Maresca even lasting one year? As for five years???
So far, these Chelsea owners have given the following length of time to their managers:
Thomas Tuchel – The Champions League winning boss was sacked after just one month of his first season under them.
Graham Potter – Lasted seven months.
Frank Lampard – Lasted three months.
Maurcio Pochettino – Last ten months.
Sky Sports declaring ‘Senior Chelsea figures believe the new head coach will be the final piece of the jigsaw to fit into the new modern structure they have built at the club.’
What is this brilliant ‘modern structure’ these Chelsea owners have created?
Oh yes, that will be the one where they spend over a billion pounds on players in two years and appoint a new manager roughly every six months!!!
The idea that Sky Sports and other friends in the media are willing to spread, that this latest Chelsea manager is a brilliant dream appointment who will naturally be so much better than those who have gone before him, is beyond laughable.
Enzo Maresca lasted only four months at Parma in the Italian second tier, his only other management job besides getting Leicester promoted this past 2023/24 season, where they clearly had by far the best squad in the division and yet still almost blew it after going so many points clear.
I am not saying it is impossible that Maresca will prove a success with Chelsea, I am just saying that everything pretty much points to him not even getting the chance to even have a proper go, as for sure he will be sacked within the next 12 months unless he manages something remarkable.
Roman Abramovich was also of course a serial sacker, looking back and not even including the very temporary (and often!) caretaker bosses, I make it that Chelsea have had 18 different managerial appointments who have managed during these past twenty years.
I think the big difference now though is that time has moved on and whilst Abramovich could attract whoever because he could basically guarantee buying trophies if they joined Chelsea, now there is far more competition and credible managers very difficult (impossible?) now for these Chelsea owners to attract. Hence why they get their mates at Sky Sports to say what a brilliant appointment Enzo Maresca is, when his profile actually says he has achieved pretty much nothing so far.
