Alex McPherson, an Auburn kicker, is “getting better” as preseason training gets underway.
Auburn is down its starting kicker as fall camp begins
Auburn’s starting kicker, who went perfect on field goals last season, is not available yet, but has progressed well of late.
Junior Alex McPherson continues to battle a gastrointestinal issue this offseason, but he has been recovery well over the past few weeks, Hugh Freeze told reporters Thursday morning before the team’s first day of fall camp.
McPherson is present in meetings — like the one the team had Wednesday night — but will not practice indefinitely.
“Getting better, thankfully,” Freeze said. “We’re hopeful he’ll be back with us soon.”
In his first season as a full-time starter last year, McPherson went a perfect 13-of-13 on field goals, including a long of 51 against Texas A&M. Dating back to his first appearance as a true freshman in 2022, McPherson has missed only one kick as a Tiger (19-of-20).
The No. 2 kicker recruit in the 2022 class, McPherson also missed time during spring practice while nursing a lingering hamstring injury.
Auburn’s backup is Town McGough, a freshman walk-on with a mortar for a leg. He was named special teams MVP in the spring game after hitting 7-of-7 field goals, including a walk-off winner from 58 yards out.
Auburn special teams coordinator Tanner Burns has also added another walk-on kicker in the wake of McPherson’s condition: Charley Schwinger, a former all-state performer from Houston and the 2023 recruiting class.
