On Tuesday, ESPN’s Bill Connelly released his latest SP+ projections. His most recent update was in February, so this update takes into account any changes since then and during spring practice.
As a reminder, Connelly’s SP+ projections are based on three primary factors — returning production, recent recruiting, and recent history. Let’s jump into where Virginia Tech stands.
Changes Since February
Here are Virginia Tech’s rating projections from February:
Overall: 8.9 (No. 30 in FBS)
Offense: 30.9 (No. 43 in FBS)
Defense: 22.0 (No. 32 in FBS)
Special Teams: 0.6 (No. 14 in FBS)
Tech’s overall 8.9 rating says Virginia Tech would be an 8.9-point favorite over an average team (which would have an SP+ rating of 0.0). Here are Tech’s rating projections now:
Overall: 9.7 (No. 32 in FBS)
Offense: 31.5 (No. 42 in FBS)
Defense: 21.7 (No. 33 in FBS)
Special Teams: 0.6 (No. 14 in FBS)
So, some slight changes in terms of rating and rank compared to the rest of the country, but overall, nothing significant.
