Rather unexpectedly, Marc Cucurella has become one of the stars of the Euros, and his career arc since a positional tweak under Mauricio Pochettino in the spring has changed entirely.
Of course part of that is just the good fortune of playing for the best team at the tournament in Germany, but there’s no doubt he’s been very impressive himself. It’s ramped up talk about an exit, with Chelsea fans increasingly split over the issue.
Most were keen to see him go after two shaky seasons at Stamford Bridge. Even his biggest fans would likely admit that for most of that time he simply didn’t look up to our standards. But others are increasingly convinced that this form he’s shown may prove that he’s got more to give, especially in a new setup under Enzo Maresca.
A hint at an exit
The strong international performances combined with the existing transfer links have meant rumours about a move have picked up traction, and his agent Aleix Pique was forced to address them today in quotes picked up by Simon Phillips on his Substack.
“Cucurella is very comfortable and happy at Chelsea and in London,” Pique said.
“His idea is to stay at the club. Under normal circumstances, he will continue there.”
While his intention may have been to say Cucurella is staying, there’s no doubt that the “under normal circumstances” makes it clear the door is open to a move should a big offer come in.
We’re sure Chelsea would say the same on their end too – we want Cucurella to stay… unless there’s an offer we can’t refuse.
At the moment it seems unlikely that anyone comes in and pays us enough to make it happen, even if he stars in the final this Sunday. But you can never say never, and this is a clear move from the agent to open the door.
