Arne Slot insists Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes did everything in his power to sign Martin Zubimendi before the midfielder rejected the Reds.
Zubimendi appeared on the verge of an Anfield switch after helping Spain wih Euro 2024. However, after reports of a charm offensive led by Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil, he opted to stay in San Sebastian.
The rejection means Slot has yet to make a single new addition to his squad since taking over at Anfield. There have been some high-profile departures, though, with long-serving centre-back Joel Matip moving on and Thiago Alcantara retiring.
Slot was asked about the Zubimendi situation ahead of Liverpool’s first Premier League game against Ipswich. He recognised the efforts made, but appreciated Hughes and his team couldn’t have done any more.
