Assess the trade: Spurs add a dynamic scorer to their hazardous Suns proposed deal.
This one is a doozy.
The San Antonio Spurs’ roster is seemingly set ahead of training camp and the preseason. They will have to whittle their roster from there, with 21 players under contract, 15 NBA roster spots, and three three-way spots that are already accounted for. Still, no matter who makes the final roster, the Spurs figure to be much better in 2024–25. That is because Victor Wembanyama is likely to take a big step forward with the addition of Chris Paul, as is Devil Vassell.
The Spurs are on the rise, to be sure, but their former rivals, the Phoenix Suns, are at best past their peak. While they do have Devin Booker, who is in his prime, Kevin Durant, who is likely their best player, is entering year number 17. Meanwhile, Bradley Beal is 31 years old and not playing at the same level he was during his peak with the Washington Wizards.
They also lack depth and are limited due to the second apron, but a bold trade proposal from Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley would change that. The blockbuster deal with the Spurs would shake up both rosters. Next up, we will take a look at Buckley’s trade and see if it makes sense for both teams.
