In a heartbreaking turn of events during Monday’s highly anticipated clash, Notre Dame Fighting Irish star guard Hannah Hidalgo, just 20 years old, suffered a severe neck injury that has sent shockwaves through the college basketball world. The incident occurred midway through the third quarter of the 85-47 blowout loss to the undefeated No. 1 UConn Huskies at Gampel Pavilion. With Notre Dame already trailing by double digits, Hidalgo drove aggressively to the basket in an attempt to spark a comeback.
She was met mid-air by a hard-charging UConn defender in what officials later ruled a flagrant foul. The collision was violent—Hidalgo’s head snapped back awkwardly upon impact with the floor, and she lay motionless for several tense moments as trainers and medical staff rushed the court.
Play was halted for over 15 minutes while Hidalgo received immediate care. She was eventually placed in a cervical collar and transported via stretcher to a nearby hospital. Initial reports from the Notre Dame athletic department confirmed a serious neck injury, with fears of a fracture or spinal damage. “Hannah is the heart and soul of this team,” said head coach Niele Ivey in a somber post-game statement. “We’re all praying for her full recovery. This is bigger than basketball.”
The Irish struggled defensively throughout, allowing UConn to dominate the paint and force 20 turnovers. Hidalgo had been held scoreless in the first quarter but fought valiantly before the injury, finishing with 11 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals in limited action.
Teammates and fans flooded social media with support, using #PrayForHannah. UConn players expressed remorse, with star Sarah Strong saying, “We never want to see anyone get hurt like that.”
As of Tuesday evening, Hidalgo remains under observation, with updates expected from the university. The Fighting Irish have postponed their next game pending further medical evaluation.
