Champ Anthony was Auburn’s top-rated defensive player by Pro Football Focus in the game against Arkansas, but his performance ended abruptly due to a serious leg injury in the first quarter. He had to leave the field on a stretcher with an air cast on his left leg.
Coach Hugh Freeze didn’t provide details on the injury but confirmed that Anthony had successful surgery and is in good spirits. With Anthony sidelined, Auburn’s already depleted secondary faces a significant challenge. Freeze highlighted Alabama transfer Antonio Kite and redshirt freshman JC Hart as key players expected to step up, while true freshman Jay Crawford could also play a role.
Although Crawford had limited playing time against Arkansas, he made a notable pass breakup and earned the third-highest Pro Football Focus grade for Auburn’s defense. Hart, described as one of the team’s most improved players, hasn’t had much game time yet this season, but Anthony expressed confidence in his potential for a breakout year.
Kite, who has seen the most action among the three, stepped in after Anthony’s injury and has been a consistent presence this season. Despite some ups and downs, including an interception against New Mexico, he is expected to take over as the starting corner opposite Kayin Lee, while Freeze plans to keep veteran Keionte Scott at the nickel position, where he appears more comfortable.
