It’s time for another update on NHL rumors. As training camps get underway across the league, general managers are busy working behind the scenes. Teams are making changes in hopes of improving their rosters. One team actively making moves is the Montreal Canadiens, and this edition of NHL rumors explores the possibility that they aren’t finished making deals.
All rumors originate from their sources and can change.
**Rumor:** According to David Calabretta from The Fourth Period, the Canadiens might still be looking to bolster their forward depth.
**Analysis:** General Manager Kent Hughes has been proactive this offseason to accelerate the team’s rebuild. Montreal aims to play meaningful games into March and April.
The Canadiens recently acquired Patrik Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets, but they may seek additional depth at forward. Young players like Alex Barre-Boulet, Emil Heineman, Joshua Roy, and Oliver Kapanen are eager for opportunities, and strong performances in training camp could earn them a spot.
With a wealth of young talent on both ends of the ice, Montreal might look to move some veteran players. Hughes and President Jeff Gorton have already traded a couple of defenders, and similar moves could be on the horizon.
**On the Block:** Forwards such as Christian Dvorak, Josh Anderson, and Joel Armia might be available for the right price. Dvorak and Armia are entering the final year of their contracts, with Dvorak earning $4.5 million and Armia $3.4 million annually. Anderson, with a $5.5 million cap hit until 2026-27, could be tougher to trade.
All three have been part of trade discussions as the Canadiens look to reshape their roster. Anderson and Armia are in their 30s, while Dvorak is 28. Each could provide veteran depth for teams in need. Trading one might facilitate a deal for another forward.
Calabretta notes that having Anderson as the team begins to compete could be problematic, and Hughes likely wants some flexibility for future moves. However, dealing Armia and Dvorak should be simpler since they have just one year left on their contracts.
**Stepping On the Gas:** The Canadiens aim to expedite their return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. A trade involving one or more of these players could be forthcoming.
Some may view the acquisition of Laine as a gamble due to his recent struggles, but if he regains his form, it could pay off. Could another bold move be in the works?
Hughes has already shown he’s willing to take risks to enhance one of the NHL’s storied franchises, and he may not be done making moves.
