This season, the Montreal Canadiens will not employ a three-goalie rotation as they did last year under Martin St-Louis. Unless injuries occur, Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau will be the two goaltenders for the start of the 2024-2025 season.
While many analysts anticipate Montembeault will claim the top spot, BPM Sports’ Anthony Marcotte, who has closely followed Primeau while covering the Rocket, made an intriguing assertion: he believes Primeau could rival Montembeault for the starting position.
Marcotte stated that Cayden Primeau might end the season with as many starts as Montembeault, suggesting that Primeau has greater long-term potential to become the team’s number one goalie.
While some fans in Quebec may disagree, it’s important to note that Primeau had notable performances last season, recording a 2.99 goals-against average over 23 starts and earning his first two NHL shutouts.
Despite Marcotte’s comments, Montembeault is expected to be St-Louis’ primary choice at the season’s outset, but that could shift if he struggles.
Do you think Cayden Primeau could potentially take over the number one role with the Canadiens this season?
