Perhaps no person in history has made New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft more money than Tom Brady, who became the face of his franchise and one sports’ most bankable stars for decades on top of delivering a record-tying six Super Bowls to his franchise. So why wouldn’t Kraft splash a little cash to get his hands on some exclusive Brady memorabilia?
That’s exactly what Kraft did this week as he spent a whopping $120,000 to get his hands on a mint condition Tom Brady rookie card from the year 2000 that also had his autograph on it. He made the purchase with Brady sitting right next to him in the Southeby’s auction house. Per ProFootballTalk, the card was one of four Brady cards that were sold at auction for upwards of $800,000 in total.
Fans weren’t quite as impressed by the feat though. There were plenty who saw the news of Kraft’s big buy and had some jokes – whether it be how much $120,000 is to a man like Kraft, or why he’d need to buy one in the first place:
“As far as percentage of income, this is sorta like my buying my son’s finger-paint picture at the grade school fundraiser. Except my money would go to an entity that can use it,” one user joked.
Tom Brady and Robert Kraft celebrate win.
“What are the chances he was just buying it for Tom? Don’t want to be seen buying your own card…” another wondered.
“Genuinely, why not just buy an unsigned card and ask Tom to sign it for you?” a third asked.
Was it a waste of money? Was it even a significant sum of money for someone like Kraft?
