The Orioles need to finalize their Wild Card roster by 10 a.m. Tuesday and are currently discussing its composition ahead of Game 1 against the Royals at Camden Yards. They are also determining the next two starting pitchers.
Manager Brandon Hyde confirmed that Corbin Burnes will start Game 1, but there’s no commitment yet on Zach Eflin for Game 2, depending on how Tuesday unfolds. “We’re considering all possibilities,” Hyde said, noting that Burnes’ performance will play a role in their decisions.
Hyde expressed confidence in his bullpen options, highlighting the team’s four left-handed pitchers and the potential for rookie Cade Povich to add depth. “We have strong talent in the bullpen,” he said, mentioning the diverse skill sets of lefties Danny Coulombe, Cionel Pérez, Gregory Soto, and Keegan Akin.
Coulombe has had limited action since returning from the injured list but has been effective, allowing no runs in his four appearances. “He’s healthy and has unique pitches, which is valuable,” Hyde noted.
The lineup won’t be revealed until Tuesday, but McCann might start behind the plate, with Rutschman as the designated hitter, since McCann has caught Burnes multiple times this season with success. Rutschman has a solid track record against Ragans, making his inclusion likely.
Hyde may decide to switch up starters against lefties, possibly keeping Mullins on the bench in favor of Cowser in center field. For Game 2, All-Star right-hander Seth Lugo will start, with Michael Wacha lined up for Game 3 if needed.
The Royals pose a challenge, featuring standout players like Bobby Witt Jr. and an aggressive running game. Burnes has previously struggled with stolen bases, but he has made adjustments to control runners better.
Historically, the matchup stirs memories of the 2014 Championship Series where the Orioles were swept. The only remaining player from that series, Royals catcher Salvador Pérez, has performed well against Burnes in the past.
Despite the pressure of Game 1, Burnes remains focused on his preparation, treating it like any other start. “I just stick to my routine,” he said.
As the teams prepare, the Orioles are also keeping their players ready in Sarasota in case of any last-minute roster changes. Hollander and Hall of Famer Jim Palmer will host pregame and postgame shows throughout the Wild Card Series, joined by Rob Long.
