Not many people could argue that post-February 17, Trevoh Chalobah was not Chelsea’s best central defender.
In fact, his performances were so good that he featured in all but one of the final 14 Premier League matches of the season. Ten of those were from the start. It was clear Mauricio Pochettino saw him as a dependable option, but the club appear to view matters differently.
It was always set to be another summer full of speculation over Chalobah and his future at Stamford Bridge – and Chelsea’s announcement yesterday (Monday) has added plenty of fuel to the fire. The 25-year-old has been left out of the club’s 28-man squad for their pre-season tour of the United States.
The Cobham graduate is once again up for sale despite proving himself in the final months of last season. The club, with the Premier League’s strict Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) see his sale as something that makes business sense given he will account for ‘pure profit’.
With Chalobah set to have no pre-season campaign under his belt whatsoever, it looks near-impossible that Enzo Maresca will select him for the squad for when Manchester City come to Stamford Bridge next month on the opening weekend of the 2024/25 Premier League season. The decision not to take Chalobah has left some fans bemused.
What more could he have done last season? Granted, it is a different head coach now, but the overall point remains the same.
