It has been a challenging campaign for Chelsea youngster Kendry Paez, who is currently on loan at River Plate. Despite struggling for consistency and game time, the teenager has still earned a call-up to the Ecuador national team. His inclusion highlights the faith his country continues to place in his potential, even as he works through a difficult period in his early career.
Paez’s journey since joining Chelsea has been far from straightforward. After completing a move from Independiente del Valle in 2024, he was initially sent back to his former club before later linking up with Strasbourg in France. However, limited opportunities there led to the early termination of that loan spell, prompting another temporary move—this time to Argentine side River Plate. Unfortunately, his time in Argentina has also been disrupted by injuries and a lack of regular starts.
The 18-year-old has faced physical setbacks, including shoulder and knee issues, which have further slowed his progress. As a result, he has managed only a handful of appearances and has yet to make a significant impact in terms of goals or assists. Still, there is optimism that changes within River Plate’s setup could provide him with a better platform to rediscover his form and confidence before the season concludes.
Despite his struggles at club level, Ecuador’s head coach Sebastian Beccacece has publicly expressed strong belief in Paez’s abilities. He described the young midfielder as a player with immense talent who has been burdened by high expectations. According to the coach, continued call-ups are a sign of trust, and there are encouraging signs that Paez is beginning to regain his confidence and enjoyment on the pitch.
Looking ahead, Paez is expected to return to Chelsea in the summer, where his future will once again be assessed. Given his age and the level of competition within the squad, another loan move appears likely. A switch to a club closer to English football, such as one in the Championship, could help him adapt to the physical demands of the game in England and better prepare him for a long-term role at Chelsea.
