“Christian simply never stops creating hits,” manager Craig Counsell remarked.
Cubs offense continues to produce in bunches after Saturday’s four-run fifth inning
“Christian just keeps coming up with big hits,” manager Craig Counsell said. “It was a big hit, got the game going and Dansby had a big hit. We ran the bases well to get us some runs.”
Nationals starter DJ Herz was cruising through four innings against his former club. There was an extra oomph in his gait after he retired the side in the first inning.
And for most of Saturday’s start, Herz silenced a Cubs offense that has been potent lately. But then came the fifth inning. Third baseman Isaac Paredes led off the inning with a single down the third-base line, followed by a walk by first baseman Michael Busch and a single by second baseman Nico Hoerner.
With the bases loaded, center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong scooted a run across home plate after his sacrifice fly to left field. Catcher Christian Bethancourt singled on a sharp line drive to center field to tie the game and advanced to second after an error by center fielder Jacob Young; left fielder Ian Happ grounded out, which allowed Bethancourt to score before shortstop Dansby Swanson‘s RBI double to give the Cubs a two-run advantage.
