Cole Palmer has signed a two-year contract extension at Chelsea until June 2033, football.london understands.
The 22-year-old had an astonishing debut season with the Blues in 2023/24, during which he scored 25 goals and recorded 15 assists in all competitions. Palmer has now been rewarded with a bumper new contract with fresh terms, with his deal now not set to expire for another nine years.
The England international, who scored in the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain in July, signed from Manchester City for around £42.5million last summer. Palmer made his first appearance of pre-season for Chelsea on Sunday as Enzo Maresca’s side drew with Inter Milan.
Maresca described Palmer as “fantastic” before he joined up with the rest of the squad ahead of the Inter match. But the Italian was quick to point out that the Chelsea star needs to work off-the-ball in order to keep his place in the side, although he said it tongue-in-cheek.
“He is not going to play if he does not work [laughs],” Maresca said in an interview in Atlanta. “I had Cole one year so I know him. I know he likes a little bit of freedom.
“But if Cole is what he is now, it’s because he learned for 10 to 15 years the way he learned at City. On and off the ball, for sure he is a fantastic player. He scored 20 goals last season.
“Hopefully he can score the same but it is not easy for any player to score 20 one year and do the same the next. What we want from Cole is to try and be himself.”
Palmer is set to be involved for Chelsea as they kick off their Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon. Incidentally, it is against Palmer’s former club Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
