After Christian Walker exited Monday’s game with oblique tightness, the Arizona Diamondbacks quickly bolstered their depth at first base by acquiring Josh Bell from the Miami Marlins.

Miami placed Bell on waivers two days ago. According to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, Arizona will send cash to the Marlins to cover part of the approximately $5.9 million still owed to Bell for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Prior to being placed on waivers, Bell was really starting to heat up at the plate. From July 22nd to July 28th, he picked up 12 hits in seven games, including five home runs.

This season, the 2022 Silver Slugger winner has hit 14 home runs in Miami. Over the past few years, Bell has moved frequently, playing for the Pirates, Nationals, Padres, Guardians, and most recently, the Marlins in 2023.
Bell’s standout season came in 2019 with the Pirates, where he hit 37 home runs, recorded 116 RBIs, and posted a .936 OPS, earning his first career All-Star appearance.
With nine years under his belt, Bell offers some postseason experience as well. Bell is currently riding a six-game hitting streak in the postseason, a streak that began back in the 2022 NLDS.
The 31-year-old exercised his $16.5 million player option for 2024, he will be eligible for free agency following the season. Christian Walker, who Torey Lovullo hinted may head to the IL shortly, will also be a free agent at the end of the year.
