The best player in the WNBA hasn’t been a very debatable topic during the 2024 season. Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson currently leads the league in scoring and rebounding with 28.6 points and 11.7 boards. She’s a two-time MVP and back-to-back WNBA champion.
While Wilson’s skill set is at the top of the league, former WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike believes she’s not the face of the league. Ogwumike called Wilson the most dominant player in the WNBA, but she thinks the tide is changing. “[Wilson] is currently the back-to-back champion,” said Ogwumike via Awful Announcing. “She is currently right now playing like an MVP. Have you seen the history she’s made? Breaking a streak by Tina Charles, most 25-point games in a row. She is the most dominant player in the WNBA right now. But we’re experiencing a shift where, for better or worse, she’s not necessarily the face of the league. The face of the league is now Caitlin Clark.” Clark came into the league as one of the most highly anticipated rookies in WNBA history. She was thought to enter the WNBA and wreak havoc right away, and while she’s succeeded, there have been some struggles for Clark. The Indiana Fever rookie leads all first-year players with 15.6 points and 6 assists. Those are great numbers for a rookie, yet she’s competing for a 4-10 team with shooting splits of 32.2 % from beyond the arc and 36.7% from the field.
Ogwumike explained that Clark’s shift as the face of the league has brought many growing pains, but she has the opportunity to educate people on the game and ultimately grow the league.
