The New York Giants entered the offseason hoping for a swift recovery from quarterback Daniel Jones after he suffered a torn ACL during the season. It was a rough year for the Giants due to several reasons, but they are hoping to turn over a new leaf for the 2024 campaign.
With OTAs underway across the league, Jones is taking the necessary steps to return in time for the start of the 2024 season, per Dan Salomone of Giants.com.
‘Quarterback Daniel Jones, who underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL on Nov. 22, took the next step in his rehab and participated in 7-on-7 drills. He completed passes to wide receivers Wan’Dale Robinson and Malik Nabers, the sixth overall pick in the draft. The hope has been to have Jones full-go for training camp in late July.’
Jones participating in 7-on-7 drills is definitely an encouraging sign as they aim to get their starter back for the season. And, his being able to build a connection with No. 6 overall pick Malik Nabers is also a good sign.
Daniel Jones needs a bounce-back season for the Giants
The start to Jones’ NFL career has been a bit rough. In 2023, he played just six games before suffering the injury. Up until that point, he had thrown for 909 yards with just two touchdowns and six interceptions. The year before, he threw for 3,205 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions as well as seven scores in the rushing game.
But, the struggles came in 2023 right after he signed a massive four-year contract extension worth $160 million. If he doesn’t get back on track in 2024, it could be the end of the road for Jones as the starter in New York.
Last season, Tommy DeVito came in and sparked some energy into the team, throwing for 1,101 yards with eight scores and three interceptions in nine games. However, DeVito ended up getting benched in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles as they turned to Tyrod Taylor.
The Giants signed Drew Lock in the offseason to bring some competition to the quarterback position, so if Jones struggles in 2024, Brian Daboll might be inclined to turn elsewhere at the position, even with a large amount of money due to the former first-round pick.
There were rumblings about the Giants selecting a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, although that didn’t come to fruition. As of now, Daniel Jones is in the driver’s seat at the position and will need to take a big step forward if he wants to remain the starter going forward. If not, changes could be coming, especially after they committed a massive amount of cash to the former Duke product.
