The San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees are going to head-to-head over the weekend. New York won the first game on Friday in San Francisco 6-2. The Yankees and Giants still have two games remaining in the series, however. Giants ace Logan Webb recently shared his thoughts on playing against Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and the Yankees, via Chris Rose Sports.
“I think anytime the Yankees go to any place they have a good crowd,” Webb said. “I kind of watched them play the Angels and the whole crowd was Yankees fans so there’s going to be a lot of Yankee fans… We’re playing really good baseball right now and they’re playing really good baseball so it should be a good one. It’s not fun facing some of the guys. Because you got to face Aaron Judge… I’m in his book, Opening Day last year. So don’t throw it there.
“I know (Juan) Soto is going to shuffle when I throw a ball and I’m going to smile at him. I love it, I think it’s great. I’m sure there’s gonna be a lot of Giants fans out there trying to recruit.”
Judge was linked to the Giants in free agency ahead of the 2023 season before he ultimately re-signed with the Yankees. Soto is going to become a free agent in 2024, and Webb believes some Giants fans may try to recruit him during New York’s current road trip.
Logan Webb prepared for Yankees-Giants clash
Webb allowed four earned runs across six innings of work in his only start against the Yankees, which occurred on Opening Day in 2023. Judge homered off Webb, but he also struck out twice against the Giants hurler.
As Webb mentioned, anytime the Yankees come to town attendance tends to see a boost. The Giants typically have a respectable attendance regardless, but there will be quite a bit of Yankees fans at the game. Webb is expected to pitch on Saturday night in what projects to be a competitive contest.
“Even my Grandma was like, ‘can’t believe my grandson’s facing the New York Yankees,’” Webb continued. “And I’m like, ‘yeah, it’s cool.’ I didn’t think of it that way but now you’re making me think of it Grandma… I’m a little more nervous now. No, I’m excited.”
Webb is one of the best pitchers in MLB. He has pitched to a stellar 2.74 ERA across a league leading 12 starts so far in 2024. He has also struck out 61 hitters over 72.1 innings pitched.
The Giants are slowly climbing the standings. They currently hold a 29-29 record, but San Francisco is a respectable 6-4 over their last 10 games. San Francisco’s odds of winning the National League West are slim given the presence of the talented Los Angeles Dodgers. However, an NL Wild Card run is certainly a possibility.
For now, San Francisco will focus on their current series against New York. Saturday’s first pitch is scheduled for 10:05 PM EST at Oracle Park in San Francisco as the Giants look to bounce back.
