with the combination of other facts and stats, that he is indeed “selling out for power.”
What other numbers suggest that notion? Well, Gleyber’s strikeout rate over his last 13 games has gone up to 28.3 percent from 24.7 percent on the season, he is hitting 0.47 grounders for every fly ball since May 12th (0.85 GB/FB ratio for the year as a whole), his opposite-field percentage has gone from 34.9 in 2024 to 23.5 in the aforementioned sample – suggesting he is trying to pull more balls – and his hard-hit rate over that specific span is 41.2 percent, up from 34.2 percent in the campaign. Will this be a successful long-term strategy for him? It’s hard to tell. The increase in strikeouts is worrisome, but more power (and the intention to hit for it, mostly) is always welcomed. And if those gains remain, the Yankees will be happier to have this version of Torres than the one who staggered through the season’s opening month.
A 13-game sample is not particularly large, so we will have to wait a bit to see which patterns Gleyber sticks to mechanically speaking, and how some of these stats trend after more games. But there has been some marked improvement considering how he looked earlier in the year, and the Yanks are finally seeing some results.
Note: All cited statistics are accurate as of the beginning of play on May 26th.
