In the immortal words of Maximus Decimus Meridius, were we not entertained?
Chelsea’s Premier League games featured a grand total of 140 goals, a ridiculous average of 3.68 per game across a 38-game season. We may have conceded the most goals we’ve ever conceded in a Premier League season, but we also scored the third most goals we’ve ever scored in a Premier League season — and the most we’ve ever scored without winning the title.
While scoring was up (and up significantly) across the league, only Newcastle United’s game featured more goals (147).
But evidently they were not nearly as entertaining as we were, as only one of their games was nominated for the Premier League’s Match of the Season award, while we copped three of the eight nominations! Manchester United and Luton Town were the only other teams with more than one.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-4 CHELSEA
CHELSEA 4-4 Manchester City
Liverpool 4-3 Fulham
Luton Town 3-4 Arsenal
Woverhampton Wanderers 3-4 Manchester United
AFC Bournemouth 4-3 Luton Town
Newcastle United 4-3 West Ham United
CHELSEA 4-3 Manchester United
This one’s a tough choice, and recency bias would heavily favor our 4-3 win against United, but in terms of pure entertainment value across the 90+ minutes, I might have to go with the 4-4 draw against the eventual champions — a standout result and performance in a season of 4-3s.
