Carlos Carrasco will not get the chance to face his former team Tuesday. The Guardians’ right-hander is heading to the 15-day injured list instead with an acute spasm in his neck.
Cleveland recalled right-hander Xzavion Curry to take Carrasco’s spot in the rotation. Curry will face New York in the second game of a three-game series at Progressive Field.
Carrasco was 2-4 in nine starts for Cleveland, logging 45 1/3 innings and striking out 34 with a 1.456 WHIP. He last appeared Wednesday in Texas where he allowed two runs on five hits in five innings as the Guardians lost to the Rangers, 4-0.
Curry, 25, made one start for Cleveland after opening the season on the injured list with a viral infection he suffered in spring training. In that April 15 outing at Fenway Park, Curry struck out three and walked one, allowing two hits in five scoreless innings. He did not factor in the decision as the Guardians scored late on their way to a 6-0 win against the Red Sox.
Following the start, Curry was optioned to Triple-A where he appeared in seven games (six starts) and posted an 0-5 record with an 8.79 ERA, 27 strikeouts and 14 walks in 28 2/3 innings. In his last outing against Louisville on Thursday he surrendered five runs, including a pair of home runs in 3 1/3 innings during a 6-2 loss to the Bats.
