South Carolina basketball 5-star freshman Joyce Edwards is no stranger to receiving accolades and recognition.
As a senior in high school, she won three National Player of the Year awards, was a National Female Athlete of the Year selection, brought home her 2nd South Carolina basketball state championship for Camden High School, and was recognized as the MVP at three national showcases, including the Nike Basketball Summitt, McDonald’s All-American Game, and the Jordan Brand Classic.
However, on Tuesday, the Gamecocks’ star freshman was on the receiving end of a new honor.
The Jackson Teen Center in Camden revealed that the sports wing of their facility was being renamed the Joyce Edwards Training Facility. The hometown hero’s likeness (playing basketball, volleyball, and soccer), jerseys, and accomplishments are painted on the walls as kids in Camden will have the opportunity to check out one of the community’s best role models as they spend time at the after-school program.
The Jackson Teen Center is part of the South Carolina After-School Alliance and partners heavily with the Boys and Girls Club.
Rated at times as the top high school player in the country in the ’24 cycle, Joyce Edwards will push for a major role on the defending national championship squad. A versatile forward who can play multiple position and guard any player on the floor, she will have the opportunity to factor into the frontcourt rotation early.
Edwards is one of three 5-star prospects who signed with Dawn Staley’s South Carolina basketball program in the class of 2024, joining post player Adhel Tac (who enrolled early while rehabbing an injury) and fellow McDonald’s All-American Maddy McDaniel. The trio of freshmen will get their first chance to take the floor for the Gamecocks in a neutral site contest on November 4th when USC travels to Las Vegas to take on the Michigan Wolverines.
