Indiana Fever rookie forward Makayla Timpson’s promising overseas stint has hit a snag, as the 23-year-old was diagnosed with a lower back injury during her early games with ZVVZ USK Praha in the 2025-26 EuroLeague Women season.
Timpson, selected 19th overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft out of Florida State, joined the 26-time Czech national champions after a solid but limited rookie year in Indianapolis. Averaging just 7.1 minutes, 2.6 points, and 1.8 rebounds per game for the playoff-bound Fever, she flashed potential with a career-high 14 points against the Chicago Sky in July. Seeking more court time during the WNBA offseason, Timpson arrived in Prague in October, eager to contribute alongside WNBA stars like Brionna Jones and Bridget Carleton.
Her debut was electric. In the Czech League, Timpson erupted for back-to-back 17-point outings against Leopard Chomutov and SBS Ostrava, averaging 18.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.3 steals across three wins. EuroLeague fans buzzed about the 6-foot-2 forward’s athleticism and defensive prowess. However, during a grueling practice session ahead of USK Praha’s November 5 matchup against Spar Girona, Timpson felt sharp pain in her lower back, forcing her to sit out.
Medical evaluations confirmed a mild lumbar strain, likely from the transition to Europe’s physical style. The club announced she’ll undergo further imaging and physical therapy in Prague, with a target return in 4-6 weeks. “Makayla’s resilience is unmatched,” said USK Praha coach Natalia Hejkova. “We’ll manage this conservatively to ensure she’s ready for the long haul.”
For the Fever, the news tempers excitement. Coach Stephanie White had praised Timpson’s growth, noting her value in a thin frontcourt alongside Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark. A prolonged absence could limit her development before the 2026 WNBA training camp. Yet, Timpson remains optimistic, posting on social media: “Tough break, but backs are made for coming back stronger. Grateful for the support.
As USK Praha eyes another EuroLeague title—fresh off their 2025 triumph—Timpson’s injury underscores the risks of overseas play. Fans hope this rookie hurdle fuels her ascent in both leagues.
