The job of a basketball coach is never-ending these days, as they are either recruiting the high school ranks, the transfer portal, and even their own team anytime they’re not preparing for the responsibilities of preparing for games. A number of more experienced coaches have cited the lack of down time as a reason for their retirements recently, but for 36 year old Jon Scheyer it appears that he can’t get enough of coaching.
Scheyer will make his USA Basketball Coaching Debut later this month as he works as a court coach for the opening phase of training camp for the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team. The camp begins Thursday, May 23 with the 12-member team expected to be announced before the team departs for the 2024 FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup, which takes place June 3 through the 9th in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Incoming Duke freshman Patrick Ngongba is taking part in the camp, one of five players in the high school Class of 2024 to tryout for the team. Class of 2025 participants include Blue Devil recruits Nate Ament, Hudson Greer, Meleek Thomas, and Caleb Wilson.
Training camp will be led by 2024 USA Men’s U18 National Team head coach Tommy Lloyd (University of Arizona) and assistant coaches Grant McCasland (Texas Tech University) and Micah Shrewsberry (University of Notre Dame). Joining Scheyer as court coaches will be Justin Gray (Coastal Carolina University), Ben McCollum (Drake University), Josh Schertz (St. Louis University).
