Both men arrived from Leicester earlier this summer after helping the Foxes win the Championship and seal an immediate return to the Premier League.
Under Maresca’s guidance, Dewsbury-Hall was transformed, finishing the season as Leicester’s most creative player with 15 assists and also their third-highest scorer with 12 goals.
There have been rumours that the pre-existing relationship has led to some good-natured teasing of Dewsbury-Hall by his new teammates.
But when asked by talkSPORT if he is the teacher’s pet, the £30million man was quick to rubbish those suggestions.
“No, I wouldn’t say that,” Dewsbury-Hall said.
“I think obviously because I know him, some of the lads just say, ‘Oh, what’s he like?’ And they have a little bit of a banter with me.
“But no, I definitely wouldn’t say I’m the teacher’s pet.
“If anything, me and him like to squabble a bit because we know each other.
“But no, it’s nice that everyone can work with him and see what I had when I worked on him at Leicester. And hopefully it can flourish.”
Dewsbury-Hall is yet to feature for Chelsea in their pre-season tour of the United States due to a minor injury.
But while his new teammates have spent weeks adjusting to Maresca’s ideas, Dewsbury-Hall has not missed much.
“That obviously was a bonus – the fact that I already knew a lot of the gaffers’ principles,” the 25-year-old continued
“So even though I wasn’t training, I could still talk to the lads about what we were working on.
“It’s nice that when I’ve come straight back in now that I already know what lads have been doing and the movement patterns and everything. It’s made it easier.”
For years, Chelsea have been crying out for a midfielder who can contribute goals, and Maresca spent much of last year trying to make Dewsbury-Hall that player.
When asked why his attacking returns went through the roof under the Italian, the former Leicester star said: “It was probably a mixture of a lot of things.
“I spoke with the manager and we spoke about a lot of things in terms of movement, position and just my mentality for wanting to score on assists and just having the hunger and eagerness to get in the box.
“So it was just a combination of everything. And luckily, last season, it managed to come to fruition. So I’m hoping that can happen again this season.”
Maresca traditionally used a 4-3-3 at Leicester – with Dewsbury-Hall playing as the most advanced midfield player.
Chelsea supporters can expect an emphasis on possession, lots of attacking intent, and intense pressing from their new boss.
On his specific role under Maresca, Dewsbury-Hall said: “I think he just wants a player that just knows the role well, knows what positions to pick up in possession and someone that can contribute in terms of goals and assists.
“That’s a big part of his No.8. He wants them to be involved in the attacking play, getting in the box and just knowing the role and knowing the positions and also out of possession pressing. He wants you to be aggressive and press high.
“So I think if you have all of them fundamentals, you’re a good candidate for the role.”
But what about Maresca the person? Chelsea have seen it all over recent years, from the confrontational style of Antonio Conte to the approachable Mauricio Pochettino.
And Dewsbury-Hall suggests Maresca has that balance right.
“He’s very focused, very passionate and determined about what he wants to do,” the midfielder told talkSPORT.
“So we know when we step foot on the football pitch, it’s all work and nothing else.
“And then we know when we can have our alone time with him.
“He’s a nice man. He was in the game for 20 years as a player, so he knows what it’s like. So he’s got a great balance, which is good.”
