The 2026 Formula 1 season kicked off with the Australian Grand Prix held from March 6 to March 8, setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive year. Early championship standings show Mercedes-AMG Petronas leading the Constructors’ table with 43 points, followed by Scuderia Ferrari with 27 points and McLaren Racing in third with 10 points. In the Drivers’ Championship, George Russell currently sits at the top with 25 points, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli holds second place with 18 points and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc occupies third with 15 points. The season continues with upcoming races across the globe, including stops in China, Japan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, Canada, Monaco, Spain, Austria, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Hungary, the Netherlands, Italy, Azerbaijan, Singapore, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.
Although Lewis Hamilton did not achieve the podium finish he hoped for at the Australian Grand Prix, the Ferrari driver remained optimistic about his performance. The seven-time world champion finished fourth in Melbourne, narrowly missing out on the top three. Meanwhile, his teammate Charles Leclerc secured Ferrari’s only podium finish of the race, coming in behind a dominant Mercedes one-two led by George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Despite falling short of the podium, Hamilton remained competitive throughout the race and pushed hard in the closing stages.
Hamilton spent the final laps chasing Leclerc, attempting to overtake his teammate for third place. Reflecting after the race, the British driver expressed satisfaction with Ferrari’s overall effort and highlighted the encouraging pace he felt during the event. According to Hamilton, he believed he could have overtaken Leclerc if the race had lasted slightly longer. He explained that the car felt strong and that he had been steadily closing the gap, suggesting that only a couple more laps might have been enough to complete the move.
The race itself offered several positive signs for Ferrari. While Mercedes appeared to hold a clear performance advantage, Ferrari showed flashes of competitiveness, particularly with Hamilton demonstrating strong pace during the latter stages. However, strategic decisions—such as the timing of pit stops—proved costly and may have prevented the team from maximizing their result. Addressing these tactical errors will be crucial as Ferrari prepares for the next race on the calendar, the Chinese Grand Prix.
Former Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill also shared his thoughts on the race, praising the close competition and the impact of the new regulations. Hill highlighted George Russell’s victory as a significant milestone while also acknowledging Hamilton’s encouraging performance for Ferrari. He noted that Hamilton appeared particularly aggressive and competitive during the race, suggesting the veteran driver is adapting well to his new environment. With improvements to strategy and continued development of the SF-26, Ferrari and Hamilton will be aiming to turn their promising pace into stronger results as the season progresses.
