Lewis Hamilton has spoken out following a frustrating strategic moment for Scuderia Ferrari during the opening race of the 2026 Formula One season. The seven-time world champion maintained that he harbors “no mixed emotions” despite missing out on what could have been his first podium finish since joining the iconic Italian team. The race, held at Albert Park Circuit, delivered plenty of drama as teams experimented with tactics during a pivotal moment under the virtual safety car.
Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc made impressive starts early in the race, briefly putting Ferrari in a strong position against their rivals. At one point, Leclerc led the field while Hamilton ran close behind, placing pressure on pole-sitter George Russell. However, when a virtual safety car period emerged around lap 12, Ferrari chose not to bring either driver into the pits. In contrast, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team took the opportunity to pit both of their drivers, a move that ultimately played a significant role in shaping the race outcome.
Ferrari eventually called Leclerc in on lap 25, while Hamilton followed three laps later. By then, Russell had regained track position and eventually seized control of the race. Although Hamilton initially expressed frustration over the radio during the race—suggesting that at least one Ferrari should have responded to Mercedes’ pit stop strategy—his tone became more measured afterward. Russell went on to claim victory, while teammate Kimi Antonelli finished second, leaving Leclerc and Hamilton to settle for the remaining top-four positions.
Reflecting after the race, Hamilton acknowledged that Ferrari likely achieved the best result possible given their pace compared to Mercedes. The British driver explained that while the team would review whether an earlier stop might have changed the outcome, he still saw several encouraging signs from the weekend. According to him, the team delivered a solid overall performance even if they were not yet matching Mercedes’ speed.
Hamilton also shared a positive perspective on the new generation of Formula One cars introduced this season in the Formula One championship. While some drivers—including Lando Norris and Max Verstappen—have voiced concerns about the vehicles and their energy management systems, Hamilton described the experience as enjoyable and competitive. As the season continues, the focus now shifts to the next race in China, a circuit where Hamilton tasted success last year with a sprint race victory and will hope to push Ferrari closer to the front of the grid. 🏁🏎️
