Mercedes have added another strategic piece to their 2026 Formula One project, confirming a new driver appointment as preparations intensify for a season in which the Silver Arrows are widely tipped as frontrunners. The announcement arrives amid growing intrigue surrounding the team’s form following early running under the sport’s sweeping new regulations.
The Brackley-based outfit was among the ten teams present at last week’s private Barcelona test, with only Williams absent due to delays in car readiness. Reports emerging from the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya suggested Mercedes were among the most convincing performers, even if George Russell’s best lap of 1:16.445 ultimately fell short of the benchmark set late in the week by Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.
Attention now turns toward Bahrain, where official pre-season testing resumes later this month, before the championship curtain-raiser in Melbourne in March. With momentum already building, Mercedes have used the interim to reinforce their development structure ahead of what could be a pivotal campaign.
On Monday, the team confirmed that Formula 2 race winner Joshua Dürksen will join Mercedes as a Development Driver for 2026. The Paraguayan, who amassed four victories and 12 podium finishes across the past two F2 seasons, will share duties with reigning F1 Academy champion Doriane Pin. Both drivers are set to undertake extensive simulator work alongside Testing of Previous Cars, integrated around their existing racing commitments.
The announcement underscores Mercedes’ emphasis on depth and preparation. Alongside Dürksen and Pin, former F1 driver Anthony Davidson will continue his influential simulator role, having already played a key part in shaping the 2026 car. Team principal Toto Wolff, meanwhile, reiterated his confidence in the race line-up, praising Russell’s maturity and leadership while highlighting Kimi Antonelli’s raw talent and fearless approach—an alliance Mercedes hope will anchor their push for supremacy in the new era.
