With training camp just around the corner, the first of likely many summer tryouts have hit the NFL transaction sheet for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Steelers tried out fullback Tory Carter and defensive end Marquiss Spencer on Monday.
Carter went undrafted out of LSU in 2021 before signing with the Tennessee Titans. A gem of a quote from his NFL.com draft profile states that “[Carter] walks around with wild-man energy.” Across two seasons in Tennessee, the 6’0, 244-pound fullback has appeared in 17 games, starting five. He’s logged 119 career offensive snaps and 266 career special teams snaps. He has yet to record a carry at the professional level.
Carter could be a name to watch as the Steelers offense looks primed to incorporate a fullback under coordinator Arthur Smith. However, candidates for the position are already on the roster, including Jack Colletto and versatile tight ends Connor Heyward and MyCole Pruitt.
Spencer was also part of the 2021 draft class, going in the seventh round to the Denver Broncos out of Mississippi State. He was waived before the regular season in 2022, most recently spending time with the New York Jets. The 6’4, 295-pound defender has appeared in one NFL game, recording a combined tackle.
Both players remain unsigned at the time of this writing, but they could factor into depth positions as the Steelers shuffle their roster over the summer.
