A mother has hit back at critics who labelled her £8.5k garden transformation as ‘chavvy’. Alison Liddell, 39, from Falkirk uploaded a video of her new artificial blue lawn on TikTok and it quickly amassed over a million views. However, since the viral vid she’s been the target of online trolls calling it an ‘abomination’, ‘chavvy’ and ‘one of the worst things I have ever seen in my life’.
But speaking to MailOnline Ms Liddell said: ‘There’s just no need for some of the hateful comments that have been left – someone accused me of being a single mum, with loads of kids and two XL Bullies.’ The mother-of-two and her husband decided they wanted to be different and stay away from a traditional green colour.
However the exceptional boldness of the blue has led many to assume she is a die hard Rangers FC fan: ‘All you need now is a Rangers crest on it,’ one social media user gibed.
Yet Ms Liddell quickly shut that down: ‘I’m a mum-of-two, with a husband and a job.
‘It’s just ridiculous. As for being accused of my colour choice being a football thing, that’s just rubbish as well – even if it was, we’re massive Falkirk fans. It’s nothing to do with Rangers.’
She continued: ‘Life would be very boring if we were all the same – I cannot believe how much it’s blown up on TikTok though, even when I got one thousand views I was so shocked and it’s just gone totally mental.’
The lawn itself set her back around £1,500 – which includes all the preparation work before it was laid. She added: ‘The planning all started last year when we decided to do our garden up, because it was all old decking that was down.
‘We decided to do the patio first and have a grey theme, then when we got to the bottom it was all slabs over two levels. We always knew we were going to put artificial grass down, but we just didn’t want green. We saw the blue and absolutely loved it.
‘Our two boys absolutely love it as well, because they love playing football, we actually have goals for them as well. I get the colour isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it goes really well with the grey and I wanted to be different.’
She added that despite the backlash she has received online, there has also been some defending her design choices and she is grateful to those people.
‘There have been a lot of positive comments, and I thank everyone for that because it highlights everything we’ve put into the garden and all the hard work we’ve done, so people can say what they like.
‘It’s funny because a lot a people have said it looks like a swimming pool’.
Alison’s video has received thousands of comments and likes from people world-wide.
One wrote: ‘I love it! I don’t go with the crowd either! Looks smart as’
Jumping to her defence one wrote: ‘Why are people so mean. She’s proud of her grden that her and her family will make memories in. Leave her enjoy it’
While other were not so supportive of her decision: ‘Love the sound of the nylon bristling as you walk across it. Natures finest’
Another said: ‘Will you do another video when you’ve finished wallpapering your fence and laminating the roof?’ And a third joked: ‘I’ve just Tarmacked my whole living room. Planning traffic lights between the dining room and kitchen also.’
