The No. 10 pick from the 2023 NHL Draft has been assigned to Springfield in the American Hockey League after not making the Blues’ opening roster.
Coach Drew Bannister emphasized the positive steps made by Dalibor Dvorsky, urging fans not to see the rookie’s first NHL training camp as a failure. Dvorsky was among 14 players cut and sent to Springfield on Sunday, with four more players assigned on Monday.
Last season, Dvorsky impressed at Sudbury in the Ontario Hockey League, scoring 88 points (45 goals, 43 assists) in 52 games. He had the chance to compete in a highly competitive St. Louis training camp but went scoreless in three preseason games. The Blues are opting for a cautious approach with their prospects, and Bannister believes Dvorsky’s camp experience was beneficial.
“I noticed him making good progress, whether in practices or games, as he grew more comfortable on the ice,” Bannister said. “These young players determine when they’re ready. We’re not going to rush them just because of their draft position. At 19 years old, the transition from junior to the NHL is significant, as is moving up to the American League.”
Bannister added that Dvorsky will dictate his readiness to play, which could take anywhere from two months to a year. “He’s a talented player and a key part of our future. He’ll go to the AHL, play important minutes, and improve, preparing himself for his NHL debut.”
New Springfield coach Steve Konowalchuk will have the opportunity to utilize Dvorsky in various roles, but first, he needs to adjust to adult life. “Kono’s priority will be to help him settle in,” Bannister noted. “Dvorsky will be living independently, managing his own life, and that’s part of growing as a player and a professional.”
Bannister believes Dvorsky will have ample opportunities in Springfield, and his success will determine his potential return to the NHL. “There’s no set timeline. If he starts strong and an injury occurs, he could be called up. But we don’t need to rush him; he can focus on developing his game for the NHL.”
