Sean Payton hasn’t been the head coach of the New Orleans Saints for two seasons but it’s hard for Saints fans to not take notice any time he’s in the news or makes an interestin
For the Saints fans who might not be familiar with Payton’s quarterback room in Denver, the Broncos traded for former second overall pick Zach Wilson and spent their first-round selection on Oregon’s Bo Nix. They also have Jarrett Stidham in their quarterback room as well.
This led Payton to describe his quarterbacks in the weirdest way possible.

Sean Payton describes his current quarterbacks as “orphan dogs”
Payton left the Saints after the 2021 season, one year after Drew Brees retired from the league. That 2021 season saw the Saints just missing out on the postseason and it was a very up and down season. Payton decided to step away from coaching the following offseason and he spent a year away from coaching before returning in 2023 to coach the Broncos.
While Payton helped the Broncos a bit in 2023, they still finished with a losing record and missed out on the playoffs. He cut his losses with Russell Wilson and it appears that Nix is Payton’s next project at quarterback.
Payton has often been given the “quarterback whisperer” label during his career but he’s had a tough time finding a capable quarterback since he stepped away from the Saints.
Since Payton has left New Orleans, Dennis Allen has taken over the head coaching duties and gone 16-18 since leading the charge in the Big Easy. It’s doubtful that he’d describe quarterbacks the same way seeing as he’s a defensive-minded guy and it’s a weird comparison to begin with.
