We got a rare mid-May trade in the NHL on Tuesday afternoon. The Tampa Bay Lightning brought back defenseman Ryan McDonagh in a deal with the Nashville Predators. The full trade: Tampa sends McDonagh and Edmonton’s fourth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft to Tampa for the Lightning’s seventh-round pick in 2024 and their second-round pick in 2025.
McDonagh, who turns 35 in June, was traded to Nashville by Tampa for Grant Mismash and Philippe Myers in July of 2022
. Apparently the Bolts still don’t care about their draft assets. What’s more, there is reportedly no salary retention in this deal; Tampa will take on all of McDonagh’s $6.75M cap hit for the final two seasons of his contract. The Lightning are still looking at a summer in which the future of the face of their franchise, Steven Stamkos, is an unrestricted free agent. And, according to CapFriendly, they only had $11.785 million in cap space to work with before this trade.
