R&B singer Trey Songz has filed a lawsuit against the Kansas City Police Department over an incident that occurred five years ago at an AFC Championship game. According to the filing, the 41-year-old singer, born Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was attending the Chiefs-Bills matchup at Arrowhead Stadium in January 2021 when fans began heckling him due to his celebrity status. The situation reportedly escalated into threats and harassment, prompting security to intervene.
The lawsuit alleges that both security and police failed to protect Neverson and instead physically assaulted, wrongfully arrested, handcuffed, and detained him. He was charged with trespassing, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer, though all charges were later dismissed. The singer claims the incident caused serious, permanent, and ongoing harm to his person and professional reputation.
Neverson is also suing Whelan Event Services, the security company at the stadium, citing negligence and careless conduct that contributed to his injuries. The lawsuit accuses the defendants of excessive force and unlawful arrest, holding them responsible for the physical and reputational damage he endured that day.
This legal battle comes amid other ongoing issues for the singer. In December 2025, he faced felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor assault charges over two separate nightclub incidents in New York City. His attorneys maintain that he was confronted by individuals who instigated conflicts and emphasized that he is cooperating fully with authorities.
The lawsuit has not disclosed the damages Neverson is seeking. The Kansas City Police Department has been contacted for comment regarding the case. As this legal story unfolds, it sheds light on the complex intersection of celebrity, public safety, and law enforcement accountability.
