Hokies fall just short to Bruins
Tech got off to a hot start against UCLA, putting up three runs in the first inning. Senior center fielder Emma Ritter sent the first pitch of the game right up the middle for a single. After Ritter stole second, the Hokies added another baserunner on a single from senior infielder Cameron Fagan.
With two on and just one out, junior Cori McMillan did what she has done best all year: send the ball over the fence. The home run marked her 21st of the year and put Tech up 3-0.
Junior Emma Lemly pitched a shutout in the first two innings, while her offense put up another run in the second inning on an RBI single from senior left fielder Addy Greene.
The Hokies were up 4-0 going into the bottom of the third, but the Bruins quickly flipped the score, putting up two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth. Tech’s offense hit a wall in those innings, with all six of its batters in the third and fourth finding a common fate.
Lemly, coming fresh off of her 50th career win, was taken out in the bottom of the fourth after giving up three runs and ultimately gave up four earned runs.
Tech tied the score at five after Green hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth and eventually took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore Teagan Thrunk.
The Hokies offense had given sophomore Lyndsey Grein a 6-5 lead going into the last half inning after she had pitched back-to-back shutout innings. The Bruins put up an RBI triple and a walk-off RBI single to beat Tech 7-6.
Hokies can’t find rhythm against GCU
About four hours after its loss to UCLA, Tech kicked things off against GCU in a do-or-die matchup.
There isn’t too much to say about this game, especially on the Hokies side. The Hokies didn’t score a single run until the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Greene that drove in freshman Annika Rohs, who led the inning off with a double. This would stand as Tech’s sole run against the Antelopes.
Freshman Emma Mazzarone pitched all six innings for the Hokies, giving up three earned runs and collecting nine strikeouts. Despite Mazzarone’s effort and Tech outhitting GCU 8-5, the Antelopes ended the Hokies’ seaso
n with their 4-1 victory.
