A heavy demonstration erupted outside the WNBA headquarters 645 Fifth Avenue, Olympic Tower, New York, NY On Friday as huge crowd of protesters demands the resignation of Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Organized by a coalition of players, fans, and labor-rights groups, the rally drew hundreds to the sidewalk, with chants of ‘Resign, Engelbert’ and ‘Accountability now’ echoing along the glass-façade building.
Protesters criticized what they described as opaque decision-making, uneven game scheduling, and concerns about player safety and communications. ‘This is about leadership that respects the people who make the league possible,’ said Maya Rodriguez, a former college star and organizer. ‘We need a commissioner who will listen and do right by players and staff alike.’ Another demonstrator carried a banner reading, ‘Protect the Sport, Protect the People.’
In a brief statement, a WNBA spokesperson expressed respect for peaceful assembly and said Engelbert’s team is listening to players and partners. ‘We are focused on meaningful improvements that strengthen the game,’ the spokesperson said. ‘Resignation is not on the table.’
Police maintained a large, non-confrontational presence, briefly blocking streets while ensuring safety. Organizers vowed to escalate pressure, planning a city-wide march and a hand-delivery petition to WNBA offices later in the week. No injuries were reported.
