The 2025-26 NBA season was expected to be a rebuilding year for the Boston Celtics. Several experienced players departed during the offseason, including Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Kornet. To make matters worse, franchise star Jayson Tatum was expected to miss most of the campaign after suffering a torn Achilles injury. With the roster in transition, all eyes shifted to Jaylen Brown, who entered his tenth NBA season carrying the responsibility of leading the team as the primary option for the first time in his career.
From the very beginning of training camp, Brown embraced the challenge. During Media Day, he spoke openly about the importance of helping new teammates adapt quickly to Boston’s system while building chemistry and trust. Although many questioned whether he could successfully guide the Celtics through such a difficult season, Brown answered every doubt with the most complete regular season of his career. He later described the year as his favorite season in basketball, as it showcased not only his scoring ability but also his growth as a leader and centerpiece of the franchise.
Brown delivered career highs across nearly every major category in 71 games, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per contest. He led the league in total field goals made and attempted while shooting efficiently from both the field and beyond the arc. His outstanding play earned him another All-Star selection, strong consideration for All-NBA honors, and recognition as a finalist for the NBA Social Justice Champion award. Despite Boston opening the season with three consecutive losses, Brown remained composed and urged patience, repeatedly emphasizing that chemistry would take time to develop. His leadership quickly paid off as the Celtics recovered and became one of the more consistent teams in the league.
As the season progressed, Brown elevated his game even further. December became a defining stretch in his campaign, highlighted by nine straight 30-point performances, tying a franchise record previously held by Larry Bird. His scoring explosion included multiple Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors and a dominant 50-point outing against the Los Angeles Clippers in January. Brown continued to produce elite performances throughout the year, including impressive games against the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Oklahoma City Thunder. Even after Tatum returned in March, Brown proved he could still lead at a high level while sharing responsibilities with another superstar.
However, the season ultimately ended in disappointment during the playoffs. Boston appeared in control of its first-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers after taking a commanding 3-1 lead, with Brown playing some of his best basketball of the postseason. But everything unraveled after a late collapse in Game 5, followed by a blowout loss in Game 6 that forced a decisive Game 7. With Tatum sidelined, Brown carried the team with a heroic performance of 33 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, but the Celtics fell short as the 76ers completed the comeback. The heartbreaking defeat marked the first time in franchise history that Boston had blown a 3-1 playoff lead, leaving major questions about the team’s future heading into the offseason.
Speculation immediately began surrounding Brown’s long-term future with the Celtics. Rumors of possible blockbuster trades involving Giannis Antetokounmpo surfaced, while others wondered whether Brown would eventually seek an opportunity to become the unquestioned top option elsewhere. Still, there are strong reasons to believe both sides will continue their partnership. Brown has become deeply connected to the city through community work, charitable efforts, and local events, while also remaining one of the franchise’s most respected leaders. As he approaches his 30th birthday, many around the league still believe the combination of a healthy Tatum and an improved Brown gives Boston a legitimate opportunity to compete for another championship in the coming years.
