Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski are set to reclaim their places in the starting XI as FC Barcelona prepare for a crucial showdown against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano. The Catalan side heads into the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final trailing by a goal, making this clash decisive in their pursuit of a semi-final spot. Manager Hansi Flick faces fresh selection concerns ahead of the encounter.
Defensive youngster Pau Cubarsi will miss the match due to suspension following his red card in the first leg. Meanwhile, injuries continue to sideline Andreas Christensen and Raphinha, further limiting Flick’s options. These absences force adjustments, particularly in defense, where stability will be key against Atletico’s attacking threat.
There is, however, a slight boost as Marc Bernal has travelled with the squad despite not being fully match-fit. Flick hinted that while Bernal may not start, he could still play a role if needed. The German coach also provided updates on Frenkie de Jong and Gavi, suggesting De Jong is closer to full fitness and could even feature from the start, while Gavi remains available and eager to contribute.
In terms of setup, Barcelona are expected to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation. Joan Garcia should retain his spot in goal, shielded by a backline comprising Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, Gerard Martin, and Joao Cancelo. Araujo is likely to shift centrally to cover for Cubarsi. In midfield, Eric Garcia is expected to partner Pedri, with De Jong and Gavi providing depth from the bench if not selected to start.
Further forward, Dani Olmo should operate in the attacking midfield role, supported by Lamine Yamal and Rashford on the flanks. Lewandowski is poised to lead the attack, offering experience and goal-scoring threat, while Ferran Torres is expected to begin the match among the substitutes.
