Two-time WNBA champion Kara Braxton has passed away at the age of 43. The news was first reported by ESPN, though no cause of death has been disclosed. In an official statement, the WNBA expressed deep sorrow over her passing, extending condolences to her family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time.

Braxton built an impressive professional career, most notably with the Detroit Shock, where she captured championship titles in 2006 and 2008. Standing 6-foot-6 and playing the center-forward position, she was known for her strong presence in the paint and consistent interior scoring. Before turning professional, Braxton played college basketball at University of Georgia from 2001 to 2004. Her impact was immediate, earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors in 2002.

Selected seventh overall in the 2005 WNBA Draft by Detroit, Braxton quickly proved her value by earning a spot on the league’s All-Rookie Team in her debut season. When the Shock franchise relocated ahead of the 2010 campaign, she briefly continued with the team before being traded to the Phoenix Mercury. The following season, she joined the New York Liberty, where she would eventually conclude her WNBA career in 2014.

An All-Star in 2007, Braxton averaged 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds over a decade-long career in the league. Her contributions extended beyond statistics, as she played a key role on championship rosters and remained a respected veteran presence throughout her time in professional basketball. Over 10 seasons, she established herself as a dependable frontcourt player and a valuable teammate.

Beyond basketball, Braxton was also a proud mother. Her son, Jelani Thurman, has pursued his own athletic journey in college football. After spending three seasons playing tight end at Ohio State University, he transferred to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earlier this year. Braxton’s legacy lives on not only through her accomplishments on the court but also through the family and community she leaves behind.
