On the final day of the regular season, rookie guard Ryan Nembhard delivered a standout performance that may have just shaped the offseason plans for the Dallas Mavericks. In a dominant 149-128 victory over the Chicago Bulls, the undrafted playmaker recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, and an impressive 23 assists — setting a new franchise rookie record. The timing of this display could not have been better, as Dallas approaches a key decision regarding his contract future.
Nembhard entered the league without being selected in the draft, signing a two-way deal after his college career at Gonzaga. While he showed promise early on, there were doubts about how much further he could develop, especially given his experience level compared to younger prospects. Still, circumstances in Dallas quickly opened the door for him. With Kyrie Irving sidelined due to injury, the Mavericks needed stability at the point guard position, and Nembhard was thrust into meaningful minutes earlier than expected.
He initially made the most of that opportunity. During December, Nembhard averaged nearly 10 points and close to seven assists per game while maintaining efficiency. However, as the season progressed, his role diminished. Playing time became inconsistent, and his production dipped, raising questions about whether he could sustain his early impact. Despite those struggles, Dallas showed confidence in his potential by converting his two-way deal into a standard contract later in the season.
For a period, that decision seemed uncertain. Nembhard’s numbers declined further after the promotion, and he settled into a smaller role off the bench. What once looked like a straightforward move for the franchise became less obvious. Yet, as the season drew to a close, he regained form. A stretch of consistent play — including multiple games with strong assist numbers — signaled a return to confidence and rhythm.
Then came his record-breaking performance, which served as a powerful reminder of his upside. Games with 20-plus assists are rare, especially from a rookie, and his ability to control the offense at that level stands out. Considering his relatively low salary for next season, Nembhard presents significant value. Whether as a primary backup or a reliable third option, he now appears to be a smart and strategic piece for Dallas to retain as they plan ahead.
