Indiana’s basketball program appears to be making strong early progress in reshaping its roster for the 2026 season. Under second-year head coach Darian DeVries, the team has already filled six of nine available spots, and initial evaluations suggest the Hoosiers have assembled one of the most impressive transfer portal groups in the country. Analytical rankings back this up, with one model placing Indiana at the top nationally for overall roster improvement, while another ranks the class among the very best based solely on incoming talent.
While such rankings have occasionally created false optimism in the past, two clear factors set this group apart. Every player currently on the roster, including all six transfers, still has multiple years of eligibility remaining. Additionally, each of the new additions brings experience from top-tier college basketball programs, with most having already played significant roles as starters at that level. This combination offers both immediate competitiveness and the potential for long-term development.
Unlike the previous season, which was heavily reliant on senior players and lacked continuity, the current roster is built with sustainability in mind. Every projected member of the 2026–27 squad has at least two years left to play, creating an opportunity for growth across multiple seasons. Although player movement through the transfer portal remains a possibility, the foundation now exists for a more stable and cohesive team moving forward.
Several of the incoming players are expected to make an immediate impact. A transfer point guard from Notre Dame is poised to lead the offense, bringing extensive starting experience and the possibility of an additional year of eligibility due to prior injury. Other additions from programs like Villanova, Alabama, Georgia Tech, SMU, and Duke further strengthen the lineup, each contributing valuable high-level experience. Alongside these transfers, a returning player with multiple years left and a trio of incoming freshmen add further depth and future promise.
While nothing is guaranteed in college basketball, this roster represents a noticeable shift from the previous year’s approach. Instead of relying on short-term solutions, the program now appears focused on building continuity and sustained success. With a stronger and more experienced squad in place, Indiana could take a significant step forward in the coming season, while also laying the groundwork for even greater achievements in the years ahead.
